About Mike Wheeler
Mike is a second generation (of three generations) scientific
glassblower and has been practicing his skills for 44 years.
After apprentice training and employment in the Department
of Chemistry at UW-Madison, he was the glassblowing facility
manager in the Department of Chemistry at Arizona State
University in Tempe, AZ. After 30 years of employment at
ASU, he retired and moved “home” to Wisconsin and the
Driftless Region.
While trained as a scientific glassblower, his skills adapt well to creating glass
art and craft pieces. From free-form glass sculptures to creating usable
tableware, oil lamps, and vases from recycled wine bottles - his passion for
working with glass is endless.
Scientific Glassblowing
Scientific glassblowing involves collaborating with university and industry
researchers to design and fabricate custom glassware for use in chemistry,
physics, and engineering laboratories. In many cases, researchers prefer using
glass vessels to contain reactions because it is chemically inert, thermally
stable, and it is transparent so that chemical reactions can be observed in
process. As a rule, we don’t make items that can be bought from a catalog - no test tubes, flasks, or beakers. All
glassware is specifically designed and constructed for each individual application.
